Senior Services

Pamlico County Senior Services is a department of county government. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00-5:00. Its purpose is to promote and improve the well-being of older adults and to develop and provide appropriate facilities and services to older adults to enhance their quality of life.

A 12 member advisory committee appointed by the Board of County Commissioners advises the staff and makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on the development, implementation, and administration of services for older adults in Pamlico County.

Our department is located at 800 Main St., Alliance, NC.

We provide the following services:

  • Nutrition (Congregate & Home Delivered Meals)
    Nutritious lunches are served at the Center five days a week. Participants enjoy meeting together over a meal, the educational services provided, as well as lots of fun activities.

    Lunches are delivered to home-bound older adults. The noon-day meal is delivered each week day by a local volunteer who also checks on the individual's mental and physical well-being.

  • Nutritional Supplement Program
    Nutritional supplements, such as Ensure, Glucerna, etc., are offered at reduced rates for older adults. To qualify, applicants must present a prescription from their doctor. Low income eligibility requirements must also be met. Call the Nutrition Director for more information.

  • Care Management
    (To assist older adults with complex care needs by identifying, accessing, and coordinating services that are necessary to enable older adults to remain in the least restrictive environment.

    To provide Care Management to persons with complex care needs. Persons will be assessed and plans of care will be developed to address health and safety concerns. In addition, appropriate services will be indentified and coordinated and clients will be monitored on a regular basis for continuity of service and evaluation of health and safety.

    In-Home Aide Level III: Aides help with personal care, including: bathing, dressing, grooming, verbal prompting for medications, as well as tasks listed above.

  • Community Alternative Program - For Disabled Adults (CAP/DA)
    A unique Medicaid program which provides in-home aides, nurses, medical social workers, mobility equipment, and incontinence supplies. CAP/DA makes care at home a real possibility for many who face nursing home placement. This program is available to persons 18 years old and older. Call the Senior Care Unit for more information.

  • Community Alternative Program For Children (CAP/C)
    This program is available to persons 0 - 18 years old with same provisions as CAP/DA.

  • Prescription Drugs
    Do you need help paying for your prescription drugs? Are you sixty years old or older? You may qualify for one of the pharmaceutical companies patient assistance programs. A social worker from the Senior Care Unit will work with the senior's family physician to complete the necessary paperwork.

  • Senior Companion
    Seniors helping seniors (usually home-bound and alone) remain independent in their homes by providing friendship, support and assistance. It offers a part-time stipend, along with a volunteer opportunity for low-income persons 60 years of age or older who are interested in community service.

  • Classes
    Pamlico Community College sponsors many classes free to seniors 65 years of age and older. Classes at the Center include: Adult Basic Education, Crafts, Painting, and Basket Weaving.

    55 Alive© is a refresher course, sponsored by AARP, for drivers 50 years old, and older to help them improve their driving skills and prevent accidents.

  • S.H.I.I.P. (Senior Health Insurance Information Program)
    Local volunteers are trained by the NC Department of Insurance and offer free guidance to seniors who are confused about insurance coverage; what is covered by Medicare; and, what they should do next. They will supply unbiased information in simple-to-understand language. Call us for an appointment if you have any Medicare problems.

  • Information and Referral
    Provides information and referral to inquiries ranging from questions about in-home services and institutional care to questions involving health and wellness programs, and volunteer and employment opportunities.

  • Legal Services
    Legal Services are provided by Legal Aide of North Carolina, Inc., one day each month by appointment at the Senior Center. These services specialize in the legal needs of persons age sixty and older, and offers information, advice and representation to those who qualify.

  • Transportation
    We provide transportation to and from the Center daily for our lunch site. Transportation is also provided to grocery, drug stores, banks, etc, as well as fun outings.

  • Tax Assistance
    AARP offers tax preparation assistance by experienced tax preparers to senior citizens and low and middle income residents of Pamlico County once a week beginning in February each year thru April 15th.

  • Senior Games/Silver Arts
    Participants, 55 years old and better, compete against other individuals in the same age and sex categories in a variety of athletic and artistic events.

    Some of the athletic events are bowling, cycling, swimming, golf, horse shoes, track and field, tennis, shuffleboard, table tennis, and many others.

    Silver arts events are in three categories: 1) Heritage , 2) Visual , and 3) Literary. The games are held in the Spring. Qualifiers in local games may go on to the State finals in Raleigh.

  • Health Promotion
    Health screenings, exercise classes, seminars, as well as an annual health fair are offered which help seniors to live longer, healthier lives.

  • Telephone Reassurance
    A member of our staff provides a brief, daily telephone call to an elderly or disabled person to verify their well-being, share crime prevention tips and other useful information. If assistance is needed, we will act to see that you get the help you need. This service is free.

  • Small Home Repair
    Volunteer local carpenters construct ramps, renovate railing, etc., to aid in mobility and ensure that disabled adult's homes are safe.

  • Family Caregiver Support Program
    Respite care program provides in-home-aide assistance to caregivers whose family members require 24-hour supervision.
