Sheriff

The Sheriff Department's foremost goal is to protect and to serve the public.  To this end it is diligent in protecting lives, property and information.  In addition to the Department's overall goal it also serves the public in day to day concerns or needs.  In order to receive a permit to purchase a handgun or to carry a concealed handgun, citizens must go through the Sheriff's Department.

Finger printing for child protective services and day-care providers etc. is also done at the Sheriff's Department.  Escorts to and from funerals, at the request of funeral home, can be provided by the Sheriff s Department.  The Sheriff's Department will also conduct tours of the jail for the schools and can provide DARE officers to visit schools to educate youth on various safety issues or law enforcement issues and can take finger prints of students.  In addition there is a School Resource Officer available to provide security for the schools in Pamlico County.  This officer can also provide some counseling to students who may feel more comfortable confiding in the officer than in other authority figures.

An animal control officer is also on duty to assist citizens with any animal problems.  This officer answers calls for service for problems such as stray animals.

The Sheriff's Department is actively involved in Pamlico County Law Enforcement Association.  This association is for law enforcement members and non-members in the county.  Finally, the Sheriff's Department works closely with highway patrol in the form of traffic control in cases such as automobile accidents.

The E-911 system in Pamlico County is designed to ensure quick and accurate response by rescue personnel in the case of an emergency. The E-911 Coordinator is responsible for the administration of this system.  This involves the naming of streets and the numbering of residences and businesses for the E-911 system.  Any residents of Pamlico County who do not have 911 addresses should contact the Emergency Management Coordinator to establish an address.
