Senior Services

Pamlico County Senior Services is a department of County government.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT:Our purpose is to promote and improve the well-being of older adults and to develop and provide appropriate facilities and services to older adults to enhance their quality of life. 

A 12 member advisory committee appointed by the Board of County Commissioners advises the staff and makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on the development, implementation and administration of services for older adults in Pamlico County. 

We provide the following services:

Nutrition (Congregate & Home Delivered Meals)

Nutritious lunches are served at the Senior Center five days a week. Participants enjoy meeting together over a meal, and participating in the education services provided, as well as fun activities.  Lunches are delivered to home-bound older adults. The noon-day meals are delivered each week day by a local volunteer who also checks on the individual’s mental and physical well being.

Prescription drugs

Do you need help paying for your prescription drugs?  Are you sixty years old or older?  You may qualify for one of the pharmaceutical companies patient assistance programs.  A member of the staff from the Senior Center will work with the senior’s family to complete the necessary paperwork.

Senior Companion Program

Seniors helping seniors (usually home-bound and alone) remain independent in their homes by providing friendship, support and assistance. It offers a part-time stipend, along with a volunteer opportunity for low-income persons 60 years of age or older who are interested in community services.

Classes

The following classes are taught by local artists free of charge at the Senior Center:  Crocheting, Knitting, and Stained Glass.   Students purchase their own materials.  Donations are accepted and welcomed.  Painting classes are offered for a small fee.  

S.H.I.I.P. (Senior Health Insurance Information Program)

Local volunteers are trained by the NC Department of Insurance and offer free guidance to seniors who have questions about insurance coverage by Medicare; and what they should do next.  They will supply unbiased information in easy -to-understand language.  Call us for an appointment if you have any Medicare issues.

Information and Referral

We provide information and referral to inquiries ranging from questions about in-home-services and institutional care to questions involving health and wellness programs, tax assistance and volunteer and employment opportunities.

Legal Services

Legal Services are provided by Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc.  These services specialize in legal needs of people age sixty and older offering information, advice and representation to those who qualify.

Transportation

We provide transportation to and from the Senior Center for our congregate meals . Transportation is also provided to grocery stores, drug stores, banks, etc, as well as for fun outings.

Health Promotion

Health screenings, evidence-based exercise classes, seminars, as well as an annual health fair are offered which help seniors to live longer, healthier lives.

Telephone Reassurance

Telephone reassurance provides a brief, telephone call to an elderly or disabled person to verify their well-being and to share crime prevention tips and other useful information.  If assistance is needed, we will act to see that you get the help you need. This service is free.

Small Home Repair

Volunteer local carpenters construct ramps, renovate safety railing, etc., to aid in mobility and ensure that disabled adult’s homes are safe.

Living Healthy Support Group  Meeting

We offer health screenings, blood pressure checks, weigh checks, and health topics with information.

Alzheimer’s/ Dementia Caregiver Support Group Meeting

Meetings are held on the first and third Monday of the month at 2:00 pm at the Senior Center to provide support and information.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly)

TOPS is a nonprofit organization providing weight-loss support.  It has about 200,000 members worldwide.  The local chapter meets weekly, each Tuesday at 5:30pm at the Senior Center.  Members give each other moral support and encouragement as they use good nutrition and exercise to take off and keep off the pounds

Senior Games/Silver Arts

Participants, 55 years old and better, compete against other individuals in the same age and sex categories in a variety of athletic and artistic events.  Some of the athletic events are bowling, cycling, swimming, golf, horse shoes, track and field, tennis, shuffleboard, table tennis, and many others.  Silver arts events are in four categories: 1) Heritage, 2) Visual, 3) Literary and 4) Performing Arts.  The games are held in the spring.   Qualifiers in local games may go to the State Finals in Raleigh.

VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

We welcome volunteers for Meals On Wheels, Senior Companions, Events, Caring Carpenters, Office Assistance, Clerical Assistance, the Senior Center fundraisers, and instructors for Line Dancing, exercise classes, stained glass, and arts and crafts, to name a few.
