NOTICE TO PAMLICO COUNTY WATER CUSTOMERS
CHANGE OF WATER TREATMENT PROCESS
On September 19, 2022, the Pamlico County Water Department will change its drinking water disinfectant from Chlorine to Chloramines. This will be normal operation for water plant operation.
Most customers probably will not detect the difference; however, those with a keen sense of taste or smell may detect change in the water. Chloramines usually have less odor and taste issues than Chlorine.

NOTICE TO PAMLICO COUNTY WATER CUSTOMERS
IN THE ALLIANCE, GRANTSBORO, AND REELSBORO SERVICE AREAS
The Pamlico County Water Department has received isolated reports in the Grantsboro, Reelsboro, and Alliance service zones of an unusual odor in drinking water. The phenomenon is not impacting all water customers, but it is not limited to a single line or water tower.
The Water Dept. staff have consulted with North Carolina Public Water Supply representatives and contract engineers and are working to eliminate the odor for affected customers. The following actions have been taken to help isolate and eliminate the issue:
- Systematically flushed large volumes of water
- Drained and washed the Grantsboro and Reelsboro Water Tanks
- Increased chlorine levels in the system
- Checked the area for cross connections, and replaced some meters and other appurtenances
- Installed automatic flushers in problematic areas
- Distributed bottled water as requested
- Conducted additional sampling
Even with these measures in place, we are still receiving isolated reports of the odor. In coming weeks, the Water Dept. will:
- Switch from chloramine treatment to chlorine
- Clean and disinfect plants and wells
- Disinfect certain lines
If you have noticed an unusual smell in your water and have not reported it to the Water Department, we encourage you to call us at (252) 745-5453. The Water Department staff apologize for the inconvenience and are working diligently to correct the issue. Thank you for your continued patience.

TEMPORARY CHANGE OF WATER TREATMENT PROCESS
From March 1,2022 thru May 1, 2022, the Pamlico County Water Department will change its drinking water disinfectant from chloramines to chlorine. The purpose of this change, which occurs annually, is to help ensure a high level of disinfection in our community’s network of water mains.
In an effort to maintain compliance the disinfection by-product requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) the Pamlico County Water System utilizes chloramination at its water treatment facility. Chloramination is the controlled application of ammonia to the chlorination, does not react with naturally occurring organic material in the source water to form disinfection by-products currently regulated by the SDWA.
Water systems that utilize chloramination must periodically return to the free chlorine process. This change provides additional assurance that the proper disinfection of water in the system is maintained.
Most customers probably will not detect the difference; however, those with a keen sense of taste or smell may detect a slight chlorine odor in the water during this period. This would be due to the presence of residual chlorine rather than odorless residual chloramines.
