Your Department of Human Services works to enable Pamlico County citizens to obtain and enjoy physical, emotional and economic self-sufficiency. We educate ourselves and our community, assess areas of need and advocate for the vulnerable young, disabled and elderly. Our vision, using every available agency and resource, is to enhance Pamlico County by helping create and support stable individual, family and community relationships. Individuals or families experiencing difficulties may be eligible for help from one of the department’s programs.

  • Adult Services
Provides programs and services to help elderly people continue living in their own homes, investigates abuse/neglect/exploitation of vulnerable adults, provides transportation assistance, assists with heating/cooling emergencies and makes community referrals for unmet needs.

  • Children’s Services
Investigates child abuse/neglect/dependency, works to preserve or restore family stability, and administers foster care and adoptions. Assistance with child care is also available to families who meet the income guidelines.

  • Child Support
Locates absent parents, establishes paternity and enforces child support payments.

  • Energy Assistance Program
Helps low-income families pay utility expenses.

  • Food Stamps/Work First (TANF)
Helps low-income people buy the food they need to remain healthy. Provides temporary monthly cash assistance to needy families.

  • Medicaid
Determines if people are eligible for Medical Assistance (Medicaid or North Carolina Health Choice).
